Review: Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap

I have been listening to so much music for the past month; I’ve been all over the place with the styles that have caught my ears as of late. But this album, Acid Rap, really got me hooked and made me think, I need to get my thoughts on this album out there.

What makes Chance the Rapper (also known as Chano) such an incredible artist is his multifaceted talents as a singer, rapper, and personality. His voice will probably stop some people from listening to his music. His voice is cartoon-like, with childish ad-libs peppering much of his songs and even filling in for the chorus of some songs. To compare his voice with another’s who many find unlistenable: if Danny Brown’s voice is the squawk of an old bird, then Chano’s voice is the squeal of a newborn chick as animated by Matt Groening.

The themes of this album mainly harp on Chance’s drug use and its effects on his life as well as how others see him. It’s an introspective drugged out view on the world, told with honesty, without going too deep. Chance is from Chicago, so where he lies on the scale from Lupe to Chief Keef is always questioned. The answer is he doesn’t make music according to this scale. He just makes music for himself, the city may have had an influence on his life but you don’t hear it in his music.

This will undoubtedly be my summer album for this year for a number of reasons. The production is playful throughout, and drops at times to give Chance a chance (ha) to throw a handful of rhymes into a very short lived acapella segment. The flow of Chance is unique and could seem over-bearing when you first start listening to him, but it is damn fun to sing along to and it will grow on you. Trust me. Lastly, this album is just so fun to listen to. If you feel like trying some new music this summer try this album.

Every time I hear “NaNaNaNaNAA” shit gets real.
